PhysEx is an opportunity for high school girls (and guys!) to learn about becoming a physicist. Students will have the chance to see the in’s-and-out’s of the life of a female physics major at MIT. PhysEx will be held Mar. 9th, from 10am-4pm on the MIT campus (see our website for me details). Events will include a discussion with a panel of current undergrads, lab tours and a poster session.

Chautauqua Short Course

Designed for those who teach introductory physics at universities, colleges and high schools. Graduate credit will be available.*

This hands-on course is designed for those interested in making learning in their introductory course more active either within a traditional course structure (lectures, labs, and recitation hours), or by re-structuring their course (e.g., into a workshop or studio course).
Participants will be introduced to physics education research-validated strategies for each component of the introductory course such as Interactive Lecture Demonstration (ILDs), RealTime Physics (RTP) labs, Activity Based Tutorials, Collaborative Problem-Solving Tutorials, Workshop Physics, and Physics with Video Analysis, along with strategies for analytic mathematical modeling. Some recent developments include the new electricity and magnetism labs in the 3rd Ed. of RTP, and ILDs using personal response systems (clickers) and interactive video analysis. The tools and software accompanying these active learning strategies are available for both Macintosh and Windows computers.
Results of studies on the effectiveness of these curricula will also be discussed. Participants will receive complimentary copies of the active learning curricula, along with Teaching Physics with the Physics Suite, a comprehensive book by E.F. Redish (University of Maryland) on strategies for implementing physics education research-based curricula. (The curricula are also available in the High School e-dition–a more convenient form for high school use .) Physics topics will be chosen from both semesters of the introductory physics course.
* Up to two hours of graduate credit will be available from the University of Oregon.

The Bridgewater State University Department of Physics is proud to host this spring’s NES/APS and pleased to present a ‘Biophysics and Optics’ theme all to be showcased in our recently opened Bartlett College of Sciences and Mathematics Complex. Plenary talks, a poster session and BSU building and lab tours followed by a banquet will be held on Friday evening, featuring an after-dinner talk by Harvard’s David Weitz on “The Physics of Cooking”. Night owls can enjoy a viewing session held by BSU physics students at the BSU Observatory (subject to favorable weather conditions). Saturday concludes with plenary talks, contributed/parallel sessions and vendor displays.
The plenary sessions will focus on Biophysics, in particular optical and nano techniques used in cutting-edge biology and chemistry research, as well as Optics; Optics in Industry and in the Advanced labs.

Registration: Standard, student and Emeritus for conference and banquet (including banquet guests) registration can be found at the conference web site. Students seeking reimbursement: Hold on to all receipts and submit request after the meeting. Please note that only students who are actually presenters will receive reimbursement up to $100 for expenses incurred in attending the meeting, e.g. registration fee, banquet, abstract fee, travel expenses. Those who are co-authors but not actual presenters will not receive reimbursement. Bridgewater State University physics students may be able to provide free overnight accommodations in their dorms to a limited number of visiting students. Interested students should inquire with Prof. Deveney at edeveney@bridgew.edu.
The deadline to register for the conference is Friday, April 5, for attendees who plan to attend the dinner banquet.
Abstracts and Contributed Papers: We are currently soliciting contributions for oral and poster presentations for the meeting and we encourage students (undergrad and graduate), faculty and representatives from physics-related industry to contribute. We are particularly interested in the following subjects for Saturday morning breakout sessions:
- Biophysics
- Optics in Industry
- Optics in BFY (Beyond First Year Laboratories)
- Calculus and non-calculus 1st Year teaching and laboratory instruction
- Vendor Displays
The deadline for abstract submissions is March 29th, 2013 – please see conference web site for details.
